A Warren man convicted of failing to stop at a 2023 fatal car crash in Madison Heights has been sentenced, according to court records.
Raiyan Chowdhury, 33, was sentenced in Oakland County Circuit Court to 60 days in jail, two years of probation and 60 hours of community service, the records said. He is expected to turn himself in at the Oakland County Jail on Friday, according to the records.
Chowdhury’s attorney was not immediately available for comment on Wednesday.
After two days in September, a jury convicted Chowdhury of failing to stop at the scene of a car accident, according to the court. However, a mistrial was declared for the tampering with evidence charge against him, it said.
Failing to stop at the scene of a car accident that resulted in death carries a penalty of up to five years in prison. Tampering with evidence is punishable by up to four years in prison.
Authorities charged Chowdhury on Sept. 15, 2023, in connection with the fatal crash.

Police said he was driving a white Tahoe on Dequindre Road near 12 Mile at about 10 p.m. on Sept. 13, 2023, when he struck a man and dragged him over the roadway for a brief period. Officials identified the victim as Thomas Kiogima Jr., 40, of Clinton Township.
They said Chowdhury fled the scene but was later found and arrested by Madison Heights police with help from Warren officers.
