A Warren police officer was hospitalized Thursday after being involved in a car crash that took place as he pursued a suspect fleeing a traffic stop on the city’s south side.

Authorities said a 33-year-old man was arrested and his 12-year-old daughter who was a passenger in his vehicle during the crash was transported to a hospital with minor injuries.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place at 11:52 a.m. when a police officer on patrol attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a silver Cadillac sedan in the area of Interstate 696 and Dequindre Road for a license plate violation.

However, the Cadillac driver refused to pull over as the officer continued to pursue the vehicle as it headed south on Mound Road approaching Eight Mile Road.

Lt. John Gajewski said the Cadillac driver disregarded a red traffic signal at Eight Mile and Mound, colliding with two involved vehicles.

As an officer chasing the suspect approached the intersection, he was involved in a single-vehicle crash, according to police.

Warren firefighters extricated the officer and took him to an area hospital. Officers from Warren, Center Line, Hazel Park and the Michigan State Police escorted the ambulance on its way to the hospital.

The officer, who has been with the department for under four years, is listed in serious but stable condition. His injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, police reported.

Authorities said the suspect was arrested at the scene and is being held at the Warren Police Department jail where he awaits criminal charges.

The suspect’s daughter was also transported to a hospital with minor injuries.

The occupants of the other vehicles involved in the initial collision with the suspect vehicle did not require medical attention.

Members of the Warren Police Department’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit were investigating the incident.

A portion of Mound and a section of Eight Mile remained closed as police conducted their investigation. The roadways were expected to be open later Thursday night, according to police.
