A 16-year-old boy is facing charges after he allegedly stole a car and crashed it in Royal Oak last weekend, police said.
Royal Oak officers at about 9:55 a.m. Sunday received a call reporting a car stolen from a 7-Eleven store near Campbell and 13 Mile roads, police reported.
Minutes later, an officer on patrol saw the vehicle traveling west on 13 Mile near Crooks Road, authorities said. He followed the car as it continued to Coolidge Highway. It then turned onto Woodward Avenue and headed south, investigators said.
Officials said the driver lost control of the vehicle near 12 Mile and rear-ended two other cars.
Berkley police monitoring the intersection helped Royal Oak officers arrest the lone suspect in the stolen car, according to investigators.
Authorities said the driver is a 16-year-old. He is not being identified because he is a minor.
Officers took him to Oakland County Children’s Village detention center. He is expected to be charged with third-degree fleeing police, a five-year felony, and unlawful driving away of a motor vehicle, also a five-year felony.
He is the latest Metro Detroit teen arrested and accused of stealing a car.
Three weeks ago, a 17-year-old was charged for allegedly stealing a car in Garden City and leading officers on a high-speed car chase.
In December, four Detroit teens were charged in a carjacking in the city after one of them, who was armed, was shot and wounded by police.
In September, two Detroit teens were arrested after driving a stolen car and leading Sterling Heights police on a chase that reached up to 100 mph.
