After some delays, a former osteopath from Oakland County has been sentenced for stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars in bogus disability insurance claims.
And though the eight felonies she committed can land someone in prison for many years, Rainna Furnari Brazil, of Sylvan Lake, won’t spend any more time behind bars — provided she pays the restitution ordered by Oakland County Circuit Judge David Cohen.
Two days in jail was part of the sentence recently handed down to Brazil, with Cohen giving her credit for two days served.
Cohen sentenced Brazil in accordance with a deal she made with prosecutors when she pleaded guilty last October to three counts of false pretenses of $100,000 or more, two counts of false pretenses of $20,000 or more but less than $50,000, two counts of failing to file/filing false return, and insurance fraud. Prosecutors said she received more than $400,000 in disability insurance payments from 2017 through 2021 but, contrary to terms of her insurance, was working during that period. Brazil also repeatedly lied to her insurance company, Unum Life Insurance Company of America, denying that she had been working as a doctor and being paid for it, prosecutors said.
The delayed sentencing plea agreement requires Brazil to pay $458,962 in restitution, which includes $424,120 for Unum and $34,842 to the Michigan Department of Treasury. She’s already paid back some of the money, according to the Attorney General’s Office.
As previously reported, the AG’s office said if Brazil pays an additional $100,000 toward restitution during the delayed sentence period — which puts Brazil on probation till next January — the prosecution has agreed to have Brazil only sentenced for failure to file taxes and false pretenses – $20,000 or more but less than $50,000 and will drop the remaining charges. If she pays the total amount of restitution during the delayed sentencing period, the prosecution has agreed to also dismiss the charge of failure to file taxes.
Michigan’s Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs no longer shows a license for Rainna Brazil. The Dearborn office where she worked as an obstetrician/gynecologist is listed as permanently closed.
