Felony charges are filed against a 45-year-old man accused of recent back-to-back robberies in Oakland County.

David Aguilar, Jr. is accused of robbing the Fifth Third Bank on Dixie Highway in Independence Township on Feb. 28, then doing the same moments later at the nearby Subway restaurant on Dixie Highway in Waterford Township.

According to the Waterford Police Department, Aguilar entered the Subway restaurant at around 5 p.m. that day and threatened the clerk stating: “I have a gun. I’m going to blow your head off if you don’t give me all the money.” The clerk opened the register and backed away, and then Aguilar grabbed all the money from the register and walked out, police said.

Based on a description of the robber and vehicle he drove away in, law enforcement believed the same person had robbed the Fifth Third just prior to the Subway incident, police said. Information on the suspect and car was broadcast to area police agencies, and subsequently Aguilar was spotted driving near Walton Boulevard and Joslyn Avenue and pulled over — then arrested — by an Oakland County Sheriff’s deputy, police said.

Search warrants executed at a Pontiac house and Aguilar’s car recovered evidence that links him to both robberies, police said.

As stated in a news release from the Waterford Township Police Department, the arrest resulted from a coordinated effort: “The successful apprehension of this dangerous criminal is the direct result of swift action by the clerk at Subway who put into motion a coordinated effort involving Waterford Township dispatchers, uniformed patrol officers, detectives, and the special operations unit,  as well as Oakland County Sheriff’s deputies from Pontiac and detectives from the OCSO Independence Township substation.”

The Waterford case was recently bound over to Oakland County Circuit Court for possible trial after Aguilar waived his right to a preliminary exam in district court. Arraignment is scheduled for March 18. For the Independence Township case, Aguilar’s next court appearance is scheduled for a probable cause conference on March 18 before 52-2 District Judge Joseph Fabrizio.

Aguilar is held in the Oakland County Jail, with bonds set at $1.5 million-plus.
