Charges are filed against a Sterling Heights felon who barricaded himself while armed in an Oakland County home after a reported domestic assault and held law enforcement at bay for nearly 12 hours before surrendering.

Dean Michael Tyler, 35, is in the Oakland County Jail denied bond on a charge of assault less than murder for the incident that unfolded late Dec. 16 in the Commerce Meadows manufactured home community in Commerce Township.

According to his file in 52-1 District Court, Tyler was arraigned Dec. 20 on that charge along with a second charge of resisting/obstructing/assaulting a police officer — but more charges could be coming based on his Oakland County Jail file. The jail file lists additional charges of possession of methamphetamine, four weapons-related crimes and malicious destruction of personal property.

The standoff happened in the 200 block of Heartwood Drive where Oakland County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call for help from a 34-year-old woman — reportedly Tyler’s girlfriend, who said that he was intoxicated and had physically assaulted her. She had fled to a neighboring residence, the sheriff’s office said.

The woman also said Tyler was emotionally unstable and had access to firearms, the sheriff’s office said.

SWAT was called to the scene after Tyler refused deputies’ commands to leave the home and was believed to be armed, the sheriff’s office said. A robot deployed into the home a couple hours later provided live video showing Tyler in the home with what appeared to be a pistol in his hands, the sheriff’s office said.

For several hours, SWAT negotiators urged Tyler to give himself up, and at around 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 17 he did so peacefully, the sheriff’s office said.

Tyler’s next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 3, 2024 before 52-1 District Judge David Law.
