A 41-year-old Pontiac man died New Year’s Day after being struck by two vehicles who then fled the scene, officials said.

Esteban Cruz Luciano was crossing Perry Street near Pontiac Road with another pedestrian at around 4:30 a.m. when he was hit by what witnesses described as an older model GMC Yukon or Chevrolet Tahoe, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

Cruz was then struck by another vehicle described by witnesses as a small pickup truck similar to a Dodge Tahoe, the sheriff’s office said. Neither vehicle stopped at the scene and continued northbound on Perry Street, the sheriff’s office said. Witnesses provided no other information on the vehicles, the sheriff’s office said.

Star EMS transported Cruz to McLaren Oakland Hospital in critical condition, and at around 4 p.m. deputies were notified that he had died. Cruz had reportedly suffered significant head trauma in the crash, the sheriff’s office said. An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday.

The sheriff’s Crash Reconstruction Unit is seeking the public’s help in identifying the two vehicles involved, and Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling 1-800-SPEAKUP.
