After 33 years of service to the Waterford, Pontiac and Lake Angelus communities, Matthew Covey retired recently as chief of the Waterford Regional Fire Department.
But he’s not finished just yet — as of April 1, Covey steps into his new role as fire chief for Springfield Township.
“I am excited to start the next chapter of my career as Springfield Township’s fire chief,” Covey told The Oakland Press. “My wife and I moved to Springfield Township 23 years ago and love the community.
“As fire chief, I am dedicated to fostering a culture of teamwork, collaboration and continuous improvement within our department. I believe that by working together, we can overcome any challenge and achieve our shared goal of protecting and serving the residents of Springfield Township with the utmost dedication and integrity. I look forward to working with the men and women of the fire department and am committed to supporting and empowering our firefighters as they carry out their daily mission.”
For Waterford, Covey served as fire chief since June 2019. Rising up through the ranks, he started as a volunteer for the department in 1991 and was hired full-time in 1995.
In his retirement announcement, Covey said: “It has been a distinct privilege to serve as the chief of the Waterford Regional Fire Department. I have been fortunate to have been a member of one of the noblest professions and have nothing but respect and pride for my brothers and sisters.”
The Waterford Regional Fire Department is now headed by Chief Matthew Nye, promoted from the department’s battalion chief. The Oakland Press will catch up with Nye next week.
