The Airport Police Department in Romulus assisted Detroit police in the arrest of a man charged in connection with the non-fatal nightclub shooting of five people in Detroit.

Damond Lamont Hunter, 32, of Detroit has been charged with five counts of assault with intent to murder, five counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm, one count of felon in possession of a firearm, and 11 counts of felony firearm.

Both police agencies arrested Hunter at Metro, but it is not clear why he was there.

According to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, those details will come out in court.

His airport arrest, as well as other aspects in the case, appears to reflect the reason for the $5M cash bond at his arraignment on April 13 in 36th District Court before Magistrate Laura Echartea.

On April 15, his bond remained the same after a bond redetermination hearing held before Judge Larry Williams.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on  April 19, and the preliminary examination of the evidence against him is scheduled for 8:45 a.m. on April 29, before Judge Patricia Jefferson.

On March 29, at approximately 2:44 a.m. at a nightclub in the 8200 block of West Chicago in Detroit, it is alleged that a verbal altercation between the victims and an unknown group of people escalated into a physical altercation.

It is further alleged that Hunter produced and fired a handgun into the group multiple times, non-fatally injuring the victims, before fleeing the scene.

The victims were privately transported to a local hospital for treatment.

“I have seen countless arguments escalate into serious shooting incidents over the most trivial things,” said Kym Worthy of the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. “Any time a weapon is introduced, it never ends well — most times tragically. We must stop escalating the violence into violence. In this case, the only good thing that came out of it is that no one died.”
