A Southfield man was in Ferndale 43rd District Court on Monday on charges of carrying a concealed weapon and breaking and entering an apartment lobby without permission.

Suspect Michael Wright, 27, appeared for a probable cause conference and is due to return to court for a preliminary examination next week.

Police said they were first called by security at a private apartment building at 409 E. Nine on March 28.

Wright is accused of entering the lobby, which is not open to the public and requires an electronic key to enter, said Ferndale police Lt. Detective Dan Kuzdzal.

“The property manager has a surveillance camera in the lobby and noticed a person there who is not a resident,” Kuzdzal said.

However, police said, by the time they were notified and officers were dispatched, the suspect had left.

“But he came back several days later and (apartment security) called us again,”

Kuzdzal said.

Police said they arrived, located the suspect and arrested him.

“He was carrying a concealed weapon, which was a knife with a fixed blade,” Kuzdzal said.

Wright offered investigators no explanation of what he was doing at the apartment or why he was carrying a knife, police said.

He was arraigned in Ferndale District Court on April 13 and jailed on $10,000 cash bond.

Police said the apartment building’s security did their own investigation with surveillance video they had, which shows Wright in the lobby two different times.

The breaking and entering charge against the suspect is a one-year misdemeanor.

The other charge against Wright – carrying a concealed weapon – is a felony, punishable by up to five years in prison and a $2,5000 fine.

Police said Wright was homeless at the time of his arrest.

He is being held on the Ferndale bond, and is wanted on outstanding charges in other cities, according to Oakland County Jail records.

Wright’s bond is $5,000, cash, for a charge of defrauding an innkeeper in Bloomfield Hills 48th District Court, and a $30,000 cash bond in Detroit 36th District Court for causing property damage.

Wright is scheduled for a preliminary examination before Ferndale 43rd District Judge Joseph Longo at 2 p.m. April 29 to determine whether the suspect will be ordered to stand trial on the Ferndale charges in Oakland County Circuit Court.
