A Detroiter who accepted a ride offer from Troy police as the vehicle he had been riding in was being impounded was subsequently taken into custody after suspected cocaine was reportedly found in the car.
The case was among the recent arrests involving controlled substances in Troy.
According to Troy police, the vehicle was pulled over on I-75 near Crooks Road shortly before 12:30 a.m. on April 19 for multiple traffic violations, and the driver, also from Detroit, was found to have a suspended driver’s license and no insurance. He was issued a citation, and, while the vehicle was being impounded, the man and his passenger were offered a ride off the freeway which they agreed to, police said.
After the two exited the vehicle, an officer reportedly spotted a baggy with a white powdery substance on the floorboard near where the passenger had been sitting. Police said the passenger admitted the suspected cocaine was his, and he was transported to the city’s lock-up facility where he was charged with possession of a controlled substance.
In a separate drugs-in-car incident in Troy, a 38-year-old Troy man was charged with two crimes for reportedly being in possession of cocaine and fentanyl after police were conducting a welfare check in response to a caller reporting a driver passed out behind the wheel. It happened April 17, shortly before 8 p.m., in the 2400 block of John R Road, police said, where officers found the man in a parked car with the engine running. He was sitting with his eyes closed, rocking back and forth, and then was reportedly seen trying to hide a pipe under his leg. The man then reportedly broke the pipe and threw half of it in the car’s center console when officers asked for it, police said. He subsequently admitted it was a crack cocaine pipe and that he had crack cocaine in the car, police said.
Officers searched him and found two bags with cocaine and two with fentanyl, and a vehicle search turned up more cocaine, police said.

Another reported incident led to the arrest of a 38-year-old Troy man suspected of operating under the influence of drugs involving CO2 canisters on April 14, shortly before noon. Officers were contacted about a black Cadillac Escalade in a parking lot on Big Beaver Road, with the caller reporting the vehicle had a flat tire, front-end damage, and the driver hunched over inside, police said.
Officers noted the tire was shredded and had been driven on for some time while flat, but when the driver was questioned about it he reportedly said he wasn’t aware of it, police said. Officers said they saw the man trying to hide flavored CO2 canisters, and he subsequently admitted he had been inhaling the CO2 while driving several hours earlier, then crashed the car, causing the flat tire and other damage. A search of the vehicle turned up a large number of flavored CO2 canisters in the rear passenger seat, police said.
The driver was arrested and transported to the Troy police lock-up facility where he agreed to a blood test. The case was turned over to the detective bureau, and possible charges are pending blood test results.
