After approximately 90 minutes of deliberating Thursday morning, an Oakland County jury returned with verdicts for the two men accused of murdering jeweler Daniel Hutchinson and attempting to kill his wife, Marisa, on June 1, 2022.

As announced shortly before 11:30 a.m.: Guilty on all counts for Marco Bisbikis — the Hutchinsons’ former attorney — and Roy Larry, who fired 14 shots into the Hutchinsons’ vehicle as they were parked outside a recently-purchased pawn shop building near their business, Hutch’s Jewelry on Greenfield Road in Oak Park. Hutch’s Jewelry reportedly had rap artists and other entertainers, as well as professional sports players as clients.

Convicted of first-degree premeditated murder, assault with intent to murder, conspiracy to murder and two counts of felony firearm, Bisbikis, 39, and Larry, 46, will be sentenced to life in prison — mandatory for first-degree murder — when they return to Judge Nanci Grant’s courtroom  on June 12.

Investigators said Bisbikis concocted a murder-for-hire scheme because he had named himself as trustee in the Hutchinsons’ trust which he had drafted a couple months before the slaying, and stood to gain financially if they were dead.

Marisa Hutchinson escaped being shot, but her husband was hit six times and died a short time later.

Daniel Hutchinson, of Pleasant Ridge, was 47.

As testified to during the trial, Bisbikis brought a close family friend, Angelo Raptoplous, into his plan to have the Hutchinsons killed; Raptoplous then allegedly drew in a felon they’d both known for years. Eventually the felon, Darnell Larry, reportedly wanted out of the scheme but felt trapped, so he enlisted Roy Larry, his cousin, to carry out the slaying.

Roy Larry was on an electric bike when he rode up to the Hutchinsons’ vehicle and opened fire. The slaying was captured on surveillance video, as was Roy Larry riding the bike just before and after the slaying.

Raptoplous and Darnell Larry were key witnesses for the prosecution during the trial, having made deals to testify truthfully in exchange for dismissal of most charges against them. Initially, they had been charged with the same crimes as Bisbikis and Roy Larry; a charge of solicitation to commit murder was subsequently added as part of the plea deal.

The trial got underway last Tuesday. Along with Raptoplous and Darnell Larry, the prosecution team of John Skrzynski, Ric Polanco and Brandon Barlow called 20 other witnesses — including Marisa Hutchinson. James Thomas and Michael Naughton, Bisbikis’ attorneys, called just one witness, a paralegal who worked at Bisbikis’ law firm at the time of the shootings. Roy Larry testified in his own defense as the only witness called by his attorney, Mitchell Ribitwer.

Sentencing for Raptoplous and Darnell Larry is pending.
