A Sterling Heights man is headed back to prison after being sentenced in Oakland County for a barricaded gunman incident and other crimes.
At a hearing May 21 before Oakland County Circuit Judge Cheryl Matthews, Dean Tyler, 36, was handed down a sentence of 5-20 years for assault with intent to commit great bodily harm, and 5-15 years for assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer for the Dec. 16, 2023 incident in the Commerce Meadows manufactured home community in Commerce Township.

Tyler had barricaded himself while armed in the home of his girlfriend, who called police to report he was intoxicated, had assaulted her and had access to firearms. Oakland County Sheriff’s deputies responded, and Tyler reportedly had an 11-hour standoff with law enforcement — including SWAT — before he surrendered. His girlfriend had escaped to a neighbor’s home, the sheriff’s office said.
Tyler pleaded no contest to the charges in April. At sentencing, he was given jail credit of 157 days.

Matthews also sentenced him for drug possession and other crimes in connection with an arrest in Wixom in July 2023, which Tyler pleaded guilty to in April. To be served concurrently, the sentences include 1-20 years for possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine/Ecstasy, 1-15 years for possession of a firearm in or upon a motor vehicle, and 1-15 years for possession of a firearm by a felon.
In addition, Tyler got the mandatory 2-year sentence for felony firearm, to be served consecutively. For this set of charges, he had jail credit of 174 days at sentencing.
Tyler received an enhanced sentence because of his criminal background which includes convictions for assault and delivery/manufacture of methamphetamine in Macomb County and ethnic intimidation in Wayne County. His most recent discharge from the Michigan Department of Corrections was on Dec. 30. 2021.
