Royal Oak man faces felony for destroying police iPad during court hearing
A Royal Oak man during his misdemeanor arraignment for a second-time domestic violence charge destroyed the police department iPad he used to appear remotely before a judge and is now charged with a felony.
The damage cut the hearing short.
Police said the domestic violence suspect, Josef Cadwell, 45, was in a jail cell for a hearing June 4 when he appeared before Royal Oak 44th District Judge Andrew Kowalkowski.
“The suspect apparently became irate because he didn’t agree with the judge’s decision and started smashing the iPad on a toilet in the cell,” said Royal Oak police Sgt. Nathan Heppner.
After smashing the device, police said the suspect started pulling the pieces apart and removed the battery pack.
“Then the iPad started smoking,” Heppner said.
Cadwell’s bond for the second-time domestic violence charge is $25,000 cash, according to Oakland County Jail records, and his bond for destroying the iPad is $15,000, 10 percent.
Malicious destruction of police or fire department equipment in Michigan, a 10-year felony, is also punishable by a fine of up to $15,000 or three times the value of the destroyed property, whichever is greater.
Police said the iPad that was destroyed is worth about $1,000.
If Cadwell posts bond he will be required to wear an electronic tether.
