A Troy woman was recently scammed out of $13,500 by someone claiming to be an Oakland County sheriff’s deputy who said she had an arrest warrant for failing to show up to court, police said.

According to Troy police, the woman received a voicemail warning her about the pending arrest unless she paid $16,500. She was reportedly skeptical but the scammer convinced her the claim was legitimate by calling her back on a phone number with a caller ID falsely showing it belonged to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. He then faxed a fake arrest warrant with her name on it.

The woman’s call was then transferred to someone claiming to be a lieutenant with the sheriff’s office who convinced her to transfer money for her bond, police said.

The woman subsequently contacted her attorney who suspected a scam and advised her to call the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office and the court directly, police said, and the fraud was confirmed.
