A Lake Orion man was sentenced this week to at least 26 years in prison for what prosecutors called a “horrific” attack on his ex-girlfriend.
Adam Richard Williams, 35, received a sentence of 26 to 50 years in prison after having been convicted on charges of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, home invasion and aggravated domestic violence.
He was convicted after a six-day trial in May before Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Kwamé Rowe.
In his sentencing hearing on Monday, the judge said he would exceed the sentencing guidelines because of Williams’ “egregious, despicable crimes,” as well as the defendant’s repeated violations of judicial orders, the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office said.
Judges use sentencing guidelines determined by criteria scored by the probation department, but can go below or above those guidelines if the judge finds compelling reasons to do so.
Williams was charged after a series of attacks between July 31 and August 1, 2023. He broke into the home of an ex-girlfriend, where he raped and beat her, at times threatening her with a baseball bat, according to prosecutors.
The arrest also led to a violation of probation for a 2021 assault conviction.
County Prosecutor Karen McDonald called it a “horrific crime,” adding that her top priorities are public safety and holding violent criminals accountable.
“I am so proud of the work of my Special Victims Unit and Chief Sarah Greene,” McDonald said. “I also applaud Judge Rowe’s decision, which will keep our community safe from this dangerous predator and will hopefully provide the victim with some peace, knowing that this defendant will not be able to victimize her or others.”
