A Detroit police officer accused of assaulting his estranged wife turned down a deal to plead guilty and potentially have the case dismissed in a year.

Diago Frank-Cassinetti Walker, 34, appeared with his attorney, Deborah Weihermuller, Monday morning in front of Judge Stephen Sierawski at 41A District Court in Sterling Heights for a bench trial in front for the incident last October at what was their shared residence.

Walker chose forcing a jury trial over a bench trial Monday and rejected a deal that called for him to plead guilty, complete an anger-management class and have the case dismissed in a year if he complied with other conditions as well.

Walker’s estranged wife, who appeared to possibly testify, agreed with the plea resolution, according to Macomb County prosecutors.

A date for the jury trial was not set.

Details of the incident that prompted the charges were unavailable.

The couple faces a Sept. 11 jury trial in front of Switalski. Walker filed for divorce in September 2023, and his wife filed a counter-complaint last December.

He remains free on a $1,500 personal bond; he has been placed on administrative duties by the Detroit Police Department, a spokesman said.
