A small mercury spill brought out police, fire personnel and the Oakland County HazMat team to Cranbrook’s Brookside School on Thursday morning, officials said.
Chief Communications Officer Vijay Iyer told The Oakland Press that it was “a very minor spill” and proper protocol was followed.
“We made sure everyone is safe, and the kids are fine,” he said.
First responders were called to the Bloomfield Hills school at 9:45 a.m., and HazMat was requested “out of an abundance of caution,” according to a news release from the Bloomfield Hills Public Safety Department.
Iyer said the source of the mercury was a toy but couldn’t say what type of toy or how it was released. The incident happened in an early childhood classroom, and the preschoolers were evacuated while the situation was resolved, he said. The kids were then returned to the classroom, he said.
Parents were notified and follow-up communication is planned, Iyer added.
