Being caught with child pornography has resulted in a prison sentence for a Pontiac man.

At a hearing Thursday in Oakland County Circuit Court, Judge Jeffery Matis ordered Justin Robert Newton to spend a minimum two years behind bars, with a maximum prison term of 10 years. Newton, 44, pleaded no contest last month to 10 felonies: five counts of child sexually abusive material-aggravated possession and five counts of using a computer in the commission of a crime.

Jail credit of 280 days was acknowledged at the sentencing hearing.

Newton was arrested last December in Pontiac following what the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said was a months-long investigation. He’s been in custody since Dec. 21, 2023, denied bond.

According to the sheriff’s office, the case against Newton unfolded after a tip came in and an investigation by the Computer Crimes Unit was launched. A home on Bennett Street in Pontiac was subsequently searched where investigators reportedly uncovered a large quantity of video and images on Newton’s laptop and mobile device showing children in a sexually explicit manner.
