A 77-year-old Allen Park woman reportedly on her way home from church was seriously injured Christmas Eve night when her vehicle was hit by a Canadian National freight train in Bloomfield Township.
Police said heavy fog was a factor, and it appears the woman — driving a 2023 Buick — turned onto the train track, mistaking it for roadway. The crash happened in the area of South Opdyke and Kensington roads on Sunday, shortly after 5:30 p.m.
A crew from the Bloomfield Township Fire Department transported the woman to Trinity Health Oakland Hospital and she was still hospitalized as of Tuesday morning, police said.
The train conductor and engineer were not hurt and remained on the scene after the crash, police said. The injured woman was the lone occupant of the Buick, police said.
The warning activation appeared to be functioning properly, police said, and there were no indications drugs and/or alcohol use was involved.
The crash is under investigation by the Bloomfield Township Police Department and the Canadian National Police Service.
Anyone who may have witnessed it is asked to contact the Bloomfield Township Police Department’s traffic investigation unit at 248-433-7755.
