Jury selection got underway Monday morning in Oakland County for the former attorney of a popular business owner accused of having him killed nearly two years ago, and the man who allegedly carried out the shooting.
Marco Bisbikis, the attorney, and Roy Larry, the accused gunman, face multiple charges including first-degree murder in connection with the death of Daniel Hutchinson on June 1, 2022. Hutchinson, of Pleasant Ridge, was shot multiple times while in his car with his wife, Marisa, outside the Pay Beny pawn shop on Greenfield Road in Oak Park, which he had recently purchased. He was 47 years old.
Hutchinson also owned Hutch’s Jewelry, down the street from the pawn shop, and was reportedly popular with rappers and other entertainers.
Two other defendants in the case, Angelo Raptoplous and Darnell Larry – Roy Larry’s cousin — have opted out of trial, pleading guilty to related charges. They are potential witnesses for the Bisbikis/Larry trial.
Late last year, Darnell Larry cut a deal with prosecutors to have most of the charges against him dismissed in exchange for what he called “truthful testimony.” He pleaded guilty to solicitation to commit murder, for which he will serve a minimum six years in prison.
Darnell Larry testified as a key witness for the prosecution at a May 2023 preliminary exam for Roy Larry, Bisbikis and Raptoplous.
Raptoplous, who reportedly worked for Bisbikis at his illegal marijuana farm in Jackson County, pleaded guilty in January to solicitation to commit murder. Sentencing dates are pending for Raptoplous and Darnell Larry.
It’s alleged Raptoplous drew Darnell Larry into a murder-for-hire plan to kill Hutchinson. During last year’s preliminary exam, Darnell Larry testified that he felt trapped and subsequently enlisted the help of Roy Larry who readily agreed to get involved with the plan in exchange for a used Camaro as payment.
Investigators allege Bisbikis masterminded the plan, reportedly drafting a will for Hutchinson from which he allegedly stood to benefit. Larry further testified that he was told Bisbikis wanted Daniel and Marisa Hutchinson killed to stop them from testifying against him in a possible federal indictment.
The trial will be presided over by Oakland County Circuit Judge Nanci Grant.
A fifth man, Phillip Sumpter, is also linked to the case, charged last November with conspiracy to murder. His case was bound over to Oakland County Circuit Court in April. Sumpter’s next court appearance is scheduled for a pretrial hearing on May 29.
