‘We all hate you’: Family members revile Dan Hutchinson’s killers at sentencing

“Disgusting, worthless coward.”

That’s how the teenage daughter of murdered Oakland County businessman Daniel Hutchinson, Marlee, described one of her father’s two killers — his former attorney, Marco Bisbikis — moments before Judge Nanci Grant handed down a mandatory sentence of life in prison for him and the man who gunned down her dad on June 1, 2022.

In her victim impact statement at a sentencing hearing Wednesday in Oakland County Circuit Court, Marlee Hutchinson called out Bisbikis for his greed-generated murder-for-hire plan that robbed her of a father and all the experiences she would have enjoyed with him had he lived.

“Marco, you were so jealous of him…how dumb can you be (expecting to get away with the crime)? I guess you’re not as smart as you think.”

To Roy Larry, the man who shot her father multiple times as he sat in his vehicle with her mother, Marisa Hutchinson, Marlee Hutchison said: ”You’re pathetic. I hope you live a miserable rest of your life.”

Like Bisbikis, Larry was sentenced to life in prison for first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder, as well as 22.5 – 50 years for assault with intent to murder Marisa Hutchinson —, who escaped the gunfire — and two years for felony firearm.

The slaying happened as Larry fired 14 shots into the Hutchinsons’ vehicle as they were parked outside a recently-purchased pawn shop building near their business, Hutch’s Jewelry, on Greenfield Road in Oak Park. Hutch’s Jewelry reportedly had rap artists and other entertainers, as well as professional sports players, as clients.

Daniel Hutchinson, of Pleasant Ridge, died at age 47.

“Nothing can rightfully describe what the last two years have been like,” Marlee Hutchinson said, recalling how her father’s last words to her were “I love you” as she headed off to school that day, and then learning hours later that he had been shot. “I fell to the floor — I knew he was dead…I was sobbing, screaming ‘my dad’s gone, my dad’s gone,’ ” she said.

Daniel Hutchinson’s sister, Roberta Hutchinson, also expressed disgust for the two killers. In her victim impact statement, she first addressed Bisbikis: “You destroyed our family and you destroyed yours. Our lives will never be the same. Our grandmother always taught us not to hate, but we hate you — we all hate you.

“And to Roy (Larry), I hope you rot from the inside and die a horrible, painful death.”

‘I never shot anyone’

Both Larry and Bisbikis professed their innocence before the sentences were imposed. Turning toward the Hutchinson family, Larry denied knowing Daniel Hutchinson.

“I’m truly, truly sorry for the loss of your loved one, but I’m not the person who did it,” Larry said, claiming that justice has not been served.  The prosecution “lied,” and his cousin, Darnell Larry — who drew him into the murder scheme — will spend “just six years” in prison after making a deal with prosecutors and becoming one of their key witnesses, he said. Darnell Larry, who had most charges dropped in exchange for truthful testimony, also lied, he said. Darnell Larry is to sentenced on June 26.

“I never shot anyone in my life — I’m a petty drug dealer,” Larry said. “Please, do not settle for what the prosecution is telling you …this is not justice for y’all. Daniel Hutchinson will not rest in peace unless they get the person who did it.”

Bisbikis also told the court that he was wrongly convicted, claiming some evidence wasn’t disclosed, other evidence was “covered up,” and that some people connected to the case made “sweetheart deals” to save themselves.

Bisbikis said Hutchinson was “ a good friend” and that he misses him. And, he added, he’ll be exonerated on appeal.

“The jury got it wrong,” Bisbikis said.

The judge said she doesn’t believe the jury returned with an incorrect verdict, describing the jurors as “attentive and invested” throughout the trial.

Grant told Bisbikis that his murder-for-hire plan was “so callous and inhumane,” and that the Hutchinsons “were just dollar signs to you.”

Addressing Larry, she said he’s “a charming individual” and “super smart” — but that he could have “gone down a different road.”

Grant also noted the extraordinary elements of the case. “I try to tell people about (it) and they think I’m talking about a movie,” she said.

A restitution hearing is yet to be scheduled.
