Southfield police: Man, 80, dies days after being assaulted, robbed

An alleged strong-arm robbery incident is now a homicide case in Southfield after the elderly victim died from his injuries several days later.

A 26-year-old man is in custody for the attack and charges are pending, according to the Southfield Police Department.

The victim, Maurice Elmore, 80, was attacked while walking near Telegraph and Franklin roads on May 30, shortly after 11:30 p.m., police said. The suspect approached him from behind and struck him in the head, causing him to fall to the ground, police said. The suspect then punched and kicked Elmore, stole his cell phone and wallet, and fled, police said.

Moments later, Southfield officers responded to the scene on a report of a man down, and Elmore was transported to an area hospital. He died from his injuries on June 10, and the Oakland County Medical Examiner ruled his death a homicide due to blunt force trauma, police said.

The suspect was arrested on June 12 at around noon. Elmore’s cell phone and wallet were recovered, police said.

Arraignment was tentatively scheduled for June 13 in the afternoon.

The Oakland Press will report further on this case as details become available.
