Eight days after the motorcycle he was driving was hit by a minivan, a Commerce Township man has died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said Joshua Steven Moomaw, 40, was on a Harley-Davidson waiting to turn left from northbound Wixom Road onto Stratford Villa Way when he was hit from behind at around 9:15 p.m. on June 16. His 41-year-old wife was a passenger on the motorcycle and was hospitalized for her injuries but has since been released. Neither Moomaw nor his wife had been wearing helmets at the time, the sheriff’s office said.

The driver of the minivan, who was wearing a seatbelt, wasn’t injured, the sheriff’s office said. Neither drugs nor alcohol appear to have been factors in the crash, the sheriff’s office said. As an investigation continues, anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 248-858-4950.

This is the fifth fatal motorcycle crash reported in Oakland County in recent weeks. According to local law enforcement:

• On June 18, a 32-year-old Redford Township man was killed when his motorcycle collided with a Ford Explorer at the intersection of Eight Mile road and Grand River Avenue in Farmington Hills. He wasn’t wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, police said.

• On June 14, a 60-year-old Orion Township motorcyclist was killed after colliding with a car that had turned in front of him in Brandon Township. The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet. His passenger, a 12-year-old identified as his grandson, was wearing a helmet and survived.

• On May 16, a 57-year-old Saginaw man was killed after colliding with a car that turned in front of him in Commerce Township. He was not wearing a helmet.

• On May 1, a 66-year-old Orion Township man was killed when his motorcycle collided with a car in Oxford Township. The sheriff’s office said it wasn’t known if he had been wearing a helmet, but family members told The Oakland Press that the man always wore a helmet when operating his motorcycle.
