A 37-year-old Pontiac woman and her dog died in a kitchen fire on Sunday, according to Oakland County Sheriff’s officials.

Waterford firefighters were called to the scene at 1 p.m. and found Lakeisha Arnae Moton unresponsive in a hallway of her single-story home in the 600 block of Raskob Street. She was pronounced dead at the scene. A dog in a kennel inside the house also died in the fire.

An autopsy by the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled her death was accidental and caused by smoke inhalation.

Police and firefighters were summoned after a friend asked authorities to check on Moton’s wellbeing. The friend had attempted to reach Moton and got no response, according to the sheriff’s office.

Investigators found the home’s interior covered with a fresh layer of soot.
